Cuphead Combines 1930s Cartoons with Challenge

Introduction

Cuphead is a video game that has quickly gained a cult following, and the reasons why are obvious. From its 1930s cartoon style to the brutally hard boss fights, this action game is a unique offering in the modern world of graphics. Play solo as Cuphead or Mugman or team up with a friend in co-op story mode. Be prepared for a serious challenge in this run and gun. It features robust mechanics, but there's plenty of upgrades and weapons for any situation!

Concept

Cuphead is about a crazy character forced to make a deal after losing a bet with Satan himself. He must collect the souls of those that have fled the Devil's judgment. However, these souls won't come willingly. Play as Cuphead and his brother Mugman, taking on considerable bosses in crazy hard fights. Cuphead offers the perfect blend of art and difficulty. The mechanics shine in this game. Players who are seeking something tough will love Cuphead. Spend hours fighting through the hand-crafted enemies, with endless encounters sure to enrage even experienced gamers! The love poured into creating something challenging as well as the execution of this concept earns Cuphead a 5/5.

Graphics & Audio

This video game is a labor of love in the graphics and audio departments. Hand-crafted art is the backbone of Cuphead. With backgrounds that are created by watercolors as well as hand-drawn and animated characters, there's a distinct 1930s cartoon vibe. Additionally, unique and memorable boss designs always create crafty combat. An enraged moon or three-headed dragon are just a few examples of the wild fights Cuphead has! However, it's not just classic cartoon art that Cuphead offers. The music is also true to this style, featuring upbeat big band beats. Frantic piano blares in the background as Cuphead and Mugman sling all sorts of weapons at noisy enemies like trumpets that toot their horns. All of these significant aspects combine to create a 5/5, memorable experience.

Gameplay

Cuphead is most easily described as the "run and gun" style of a video game. Collect different weapons, power-ups, and secrets as Cuphead explores the Inkwell Isles. These items can be equipped to Cuphead's card, which is the character upgrade screen. Different combinations will create different effects, so be sure and experiment with all kinds! Additionally, some coins can be spent at the shop for more upgrades. Everything is accessed via a 2D, level-based world map. Selecting a level drops Cuphead (and Mugman for co-op) straight into the action! Some levels follow Cuphead as he moves, scrolling along behind the characters. These spawn anything from angry flowers to deadly pits. Others feature stationary fights. Cuphead earns a 5/5 by mixing up game play constantly. Don't forget to keep on those toes because the only thing that stays the same in Cuphead is how challenging and unforgiving combat proves.

Conclusion

In an era of video games that often focus on the latest graphics, Cuphead sets itself apart. It shines as something unique because of its distinct art and music. Additionally, it does not shy away from being a challenge. It often does quite the opposite. Be prepared to get frustrated while falling in love with all of the cult classic characters. This must-play action video game is available on consoles and PC.

TL/DR

Classic cartoons and wild run and gun gameplay combine in Cuphead, the instant classic from developer Studio MDHR Entertainment Inc.

From the Developers

What follows is the official description of Cuphead, from the developers.

Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or local co-op) as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to the devil!
