Overwatch

A futuristic world where robots have gone mad

Most multiplayer shooters aren't exactly known for their in-depth lore, but Blizzard took this one in a different direction. The game takes place on a futuristic Earth in which robotic facilities went mad and began producing killer robots that attacked humans. As a result, the various nations of the world are forced to produce super-soldiers who must guard the world against the robotic threat, despite legal opposition to their efforts.

Taking a laser to the face has never been this much fun!

For players, the end result is a wild, creative, first-person shooter, but one with more depth than you may be used to. In-game characters - and there is a wide range of them - aren't just avatars: They seem like real people with backstories, personality and strengths, and weaknesses that go beyond being human bags of meat that shoot and get shot at.

Graphics and Audio

The graphics of this one are among the best in recent memory. Every image is an explosion of color and light. Weapons crackle with energy and shields glow when struck.

It's hard to imagine a shooter that somehow made dying seem whimsical, but Overwatch did it!

What's even more appealing about the game's impressive graphics is they are stylized and unique. Far too many first-person shooters quickly devolve in the gritty, gray archetype. Overwatch goes in the complete opposite direction and is all the better for it.

The sound effects are significant, but like all first-person shooters, they can get repetitive. As any player of Overwatch knows, by the 3rd time you play, you're going to be tired of hearing the character's catchphrases.

Gameplay

The game provides you with 21 characters that occupy roughly four different archetypes: Tanks, Supports, Attackers, and Defenders. Like all good games, these types fit the various styles of some players better than others. It's worth noting that each type has a wide range within it. As a result, players will have to experiment for some time before determining what kind are most comfortable with.

What is perhaps most interesting about Overwatch's skill requirements is that the game changes what skill means. Yes, you have to have sharp reflexes and good aim, but reading maps, understand tactics, and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent's characters is just as important.

Indeed, this is where Overwatch's brilliance truly shines through. The various weapons and tactics that work for one character and objective will fail catastrophically on others. As a result, you have to know your character to be good at playing with them. This can create some grief for first-time players and increase the game's learning curve, but it's still well worth it when you master the game's various systems.

Conclusion

The game is produced by Blizzard and available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.

If a first-person, multiplayer shooter isn't replayable, you're playing the wrong game. Thankfully, Overwatch doesn't fail to deliver. It contains 21 characters, 12 maps, and countless details within each variation. As a result, you can play for dozens of hours and never get bored.

TL/DR

Overwatch is groundbreaking; it's a creative, addictive, and explosive shooter that offers something for anyone who enjoys the genre.
