Scrap Mechanic Review: One Man's Trash is Another's Treasure

Introduction

The sandbox genre is one that has tons of titles in 2020, but few focus on machines or mechanics. Fear no more, though, because Scrap Mechanic is here! This multiplayer sandbox game is all about building awesome machines and showing them off. The early access title offers creative mode, tons of different parts, and even the ability to share creations with other players online!

Concept

There are countless games where you can focus on building houses or whole worlds. Scrap Mechanic offers a mechanical take on this beloved genre. The concept behind Scrap Mechanic is sandbox driven (pun intended). It earns an easy 5/5 because of its unique ability to create a niche market for people who love machines and newcomers alike. There are over 100 unique pieces available for mixing and matching, so you'll never get bored of combining and creating new pieces! Lovers of sandbox games will want to give this one a look.

Graphics and Audio

Scrap Mechanic is a game in early access, which means that there's plenty of tweaks and adjustments happening. The graphics are nothing particularly fantastic on the individual level, but being able to put so many different parts together is something unique. The average look and feel of the game is still being updated. Audio is realistic, with new machines making all sorts of grinding and crunching noises to help you keep track of what works and what doesn't. There are plenty of unique creations out there, and the game supports Steam Workshop. Meaning that any player can try their hand at creating something unique for this game. Mix and match different prints from many various sources. This is the biggest positive about the graphics and audio but isn't quite enough to take this aspect above 3/5, or average.

Gameplay

The only model currently available is creative. It's one of the drawbacks of Scrap Mechanic. Nonetheless, the developers have a survival mode planned. Some of the more positive aspects of gameplay are the connect tool, sledgehammer, and Mechanics' Handbook. The connect tool lets you build things that generally wouldn't be possible. Connect any number of unique parts to create truly unique machines in the shop or out in the wild. Mix and match by using the sledgehammer. This tool is critical for disassembling or tweaking machines! Whack whatever part you want to remove, and watch the wacky physics as it goes flying. There are tons of fun with these two tools. Lastly, the Mechanics' Handbook has tips and tricks for optimizing Scrap Mechanic. Play how you want with the advice of the developers never far from hand. Build machines with these indispensable tools, then take them out into the world. Build, explore, and share this 4/5 machine head's dream with friends thanks to the multiplayer options.

Conclusion

Scrap Mechanic is still in early access but offers a strong backbone. The creative mode is similar to other building games, so it's easy to jump in and create without much struggle. The online multiplayer offers a great way for you to play together with friends, or engage with the community. Build anything from hot rods to mechanic dragons with over 100 custom parts already available! Check out what others are building in this machine-based sandbox game on Steam. For players who love creating in an online setting, this is one to look out for!

TL/DR

Scrap Mechanic is the online multiplayer sandbox focused on any level of machine-building!
