Nostalgia: an 8-bit sidescroller

Introduction

Soldier Blade is a classic 8-bit video game that is a heavy dose of nostalgia. This side-scrolling shooter is a blast from the past available on Wii, Wii U, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and in-browser websites on Microsoft Windows and MacOS operating systems. It has levels that get more and more difficult as players complete them. In addition, there are also lots of enemies that add challenges in many ways.

Concept

In this scroller, players take on the role of a fighter pilot in an experimental ship called the Star Soldier v0.92. Take on an army of aliens set on conquering the planet. In light of this, defending the planet is an absolute must. Hop in the ship and take to the skies across the world, and sometimes out of this world! The story, while straightforward, does a great job showing off classic sci-fi storytelling.

Graphics & Audio

This video game is a gem in the world of scrolling action shooters. Because it was originally published in 1992, it's a great example of this genre from the 1990s. The graphics are surprisingly clean. 2D alien spacecraft fly around and shoot tons of multi-colored lasers. Other enemies appear a lot with weapons like bombs among other things. Levels take place on many terrains, which are also 2D based. Experience levels from outer space to big desert stretches. Additionally, high-tech sound effects help create a futuristic setting. A thumping retro soundtrack in the background completes an immersive urgency that the planet is under attack. As a result, this really helps Soldier Blade players get into the game.

Gameplay

Soldier Blade is a scroller. This means that combat happens vertically, and players dodge around on the screen. While enemies swarm from everywhere, players dodge incoming attacks. Be sure to return fire with lots of different weapons. There are tons of bad guys that have distinct weapons. Expect the unexpected, such as lasers and storms of bullets flying across the screen. Players get power-ups and upgrades in a few different forms. Sometimes, these items kill huge groups in one blast. Furthermore, there's even an occasional visit from allies. Huge bright lasers clear out groups and prepare players for the next round. Each level starts slowly and progresses through waves of enemies. Take on mini-bosses and finally end each level with the boss. Employing lots of different mechanics is crucial to surviving through the crossfire!

Conclusion

There is a real love of all things 8-bit that is happening, and Soldier Blade absolutely deserves some of that attention. Experience a classic sci-fi scroller story where players defend the planet from aliens using weapons and skill. Dodge bad guys and return fire. Difficulty progression is balanced, moving from small groups of enemies to large ones. Eventually, face down mini-bosses and bosses. Unlock some additional weapons while playing through the different levels. The nostalgia is ramped up with stunning 8-bit graphics and chirpy sci-fi sounds. Between the soundtrack, easy to master gameplay, and epic full-screen battles, Soldier Blade earns a spot among the greats.

Summary

Soldier Blade is a classic sci-fi vertical scrolling shooter that perfectly combines old school graphics and huge on-screen battles.

From the Developers

What follows is the official description of SOLDIER BLADE, from the developers.

You're an SIA (Special Interception Airforce) pilot flying the heavy assault fighter, "Soldier Blade". Face the Zeograd invasion force with weapon attacks that change each time you grab a power-up item. You can unleash 3 different kinds of attack depending on the color of the power-up item. New features, such as the "Gunbody" option for avoiding enemy attacks and the "Burst Out" system (which has a different effect depending on your power-up level), add a strategic element which requires you to make snap decisions about which items to grab and when to use special attacks. Awesome boss battles await you at the end of each operation! Play in "CHALLENGE" mode and try to get as many points as you can in a limited amount of time. With all these great features, things are sure to heat up!

This classic game is part of the Virtual Console service, which brings you great games created for consoles such as NES, Super NES and Game Boy Advance. We hope you'll enjoy the new features (including off-TV play) that have been added to this title. See more Virtual Console games for Wii U.
