Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator - Your mind, your soldiers, your carnage, and also, chickens....?

An absurd name, and an equally absurd concept

Take control of a wide range of armies

Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator does users the favor of describing what it is in its title. The game allows you to take control of a wide range of armies, both real and imagined. The options are seemingly endless, giving you the chance to simulate countless battles and allowing users to face off in a simulated battle of your choosing.

Look at all those chickens, killing all those soldiers, wait, what?

At its core, Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator is a sandbox battle simulation game. The concept is fascinating because it is just so open-ended. You can truly pick any number of types of armies. One million penguins vs. ten giant versions of Chuck Norris? Yup. Have a great time.

Is that a soldier, a blue speck, or a twitching ghost?

There's no way around it: The graphics are abysmal.

Even with a strange concept, if you are playing a battle simulator game, there needs to be some detail to gain a sense of immersion. Battles have to be visual, gory, and visceral. Unfortunately, "Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator's graphics make you feel like you need to get the prescription of your glasses adjusted." The game doesn't even try to pull you in with sharpness, color, or attention to detail. It looks like a mobile game from 2012.

The game is now three years old, so it's somewhat unfair to judge it by modern standards. But, even from 2017, reviewers noted that its visuals were somewhat lacking. Even more devastatingly is that there were major frame-rate issues when the game first launched. Now adding more characters and soldiers, the frame-rate problem compounds. No game can afford frame-rate issues, but in a battle simulator that requires quick reflexes, such issues are almost game-breaking. Combine these issues with choppy animations and awkward game-interfaces, and you have a significant problem.

A Spectator's Sport

Much of the game-play is about making yourself laugh. You pick insane scenarios for battles and then watch them play out. You can select a number of real-life soldiers, animals, or historical figures, adjust their size, and watch them fight in several locations, which you can also choose.

But that's about it. You can not control the battle, nor manage tactics or heal units. A good battle simulator should do more than just set broad rules of engagement and force users to watch combatants attack each other. Unfortunately, Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator gives you an arena to watch things happen, not play the game. In essence, this format is essentially like you picking your own "Let's Play" video to watch. Yeah, it can look cool in a YouTube clip, but a good game should be controllable. This game fails in that mark.

Highly re-playable with wide array of options

Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator is available for download on Steam for $14.99.

The good news is that the game is highly re-playable. Its wide array of options and customization allows you to have a great time simulating battles, both real and imaginary. Within the boundaries established by the game's concepts, the only limit is your imagination. Yes, it is possible to get bored with the idea behind the game eventually, and it's various technical issues don't help, but at least you can have fun when you do play.

TL/DR

A fascinating "Choose your own battle" concept that fails in its execution.
