Animal Jam is a children's online virtual world. In the game, children can interact with other kids their age and play games - all while learning facts about animals and their habitats.

Concept

Animal Jam is an online community geared exclusively towards children, built in the same vein as Club Penguin. Players start by creating an animal avatar and going through a tutorial that explains the game's basics. From there, players explore the world, which consists of the various lands of Jamaa.

The concept is solid and time tested, but what really will get to players is that the animal theming of the game is more than just decorative. Produced by the National Geographic, the game is studded with information, videos and expert explanations about the animals which live on the specific lands. Of course, virtually all of this learning is interactive: Players can click, touch and even submit questions.

Graphics and Audio

This game is designed for kids, and it's graphics and audio reflect that. The graphics are in a cartoonish style. Individual avatars do have minor animations that can be accessed, but that's about as advanced as the graphics go. Some reviewers describe the world created using words like "cool" and "vibrant." While these graphics may impress younger kids, the older ones may quickly roll their eyes at these features. The graphics have clearly been developed for smaller children.

Gameplay

Like many of these online worlds, players can click on and interact with various objects. There are a series of games that they can play and earn gems. The gems can be used to purchase upgrades and furniture for each player's den. Better game scores mean more gems, which means cool upgrade options and music for your den, or a bigger home. Players can even purchase their pet.

Reviews are mixed on the games; some can be engaging and incorporate the learning well, while others are too simplistic.

An underrated aspect of this game is that it gives kids the chance to interact with other online users in a reasonably controlled environment. The emphasis of this game is on social interaction. Players can chat, attend events and parties, make friends and participate in a rudimentary social network. Be warned; while there are profanity controls, like anything on the internet, they are not foolproof (though the chat does have live monitoring as well). Some reviewers noted that foul language and bullying are common. Parents should be sure to warn their kids about the dangers of the internet and the basics of internet safety first.

The good news is that, aside from the possibility of an older kid using a scrambled version of a four-letter word, all of the content is very kid-friendly. There's no sex, no drugs, no violence and nothing that even the strictest parent can object too. Furthermore, it's easy to block and report users who are violating the game's rules.

The game has a robust suite of parental controls, so parents can exert a wide range of control over what their kids participate in. Furthermore, Animal Jam has no in-game advertising. A paid membership will grant additional features, but that's about it as far as the commercialization goes, and by today's standards, that's not bad.

Conclusion

There is so much to do and explore in the world of Jamaa, making it difficult to get bored. The learning options, games, chance to interact with others provides for dozens of hours of fun, even for the most over-stimulated child.

TL/DR

A great game with plenty of interaction, providing the players with a chance to learn about the internet and animals.
