What makes a game count as a game? As the world of video games evolves, this is probably a question that's going to come up more and more. Gacha Life for PC is a good litmus test for many because it's a game that doesn't feel much like a traditional video game. Whether that is a good or a bad thing, though, depends on whether or not you are in this game's target audience.
Gacha Life for PC isn't really about playing a game so much as it is about playing with characters. If you've ever wanted to dress up anime characters and throw them into scenes of your own devising, you are absolutely in the target audience for this game. It basically takes what a lot of people love about Japanese games and jettisons the part that involves actually playing a video game, leaving behind a rather odd doll simulator that nonetheless has some adherents.
There was a point in time at which saying that a game looked like a mobile game was an insult. While smartphones have come a long way in terms of what they can display, it's hard to argue that a PC game and a mobile ought to have much in common in the graphical department. Gacha Life absolutely looks like a mobile game, with very simplistic graphics and even simpler designs. It looks like a modern mobile game, at last, so that's a positive.
It's hard to really nail down whether the audio is good or bad. It's definitely not horrifying, but there's nothing to the audio that makes it memorable. It is certainly there, but you aren't going to miss much if you just choose to turn it off. In short, the audio is about as forgettable as the rest of the game.
It's really hard to say what the gameplay elements of Gacha Life are supposed to be because this game doesn't really fit in the parameters that would one usually create for such a category. You can set up a few characters and accessories and make some scenes - that's about it. You can also play some mini-games and interact in the 'Life' mode, neither of which are very entertaining. This game is probably about as casual as it gets, though, as there's no real need for players to have any particular skills to gain new items or accessories.
It's very hard to recommend this game to anyone who is not already in its target audience. While there's probably a lot of fun to be had by putting the characters into various scenes and dressing them in certain ways, it doesn't really scratch the gaming itch in the same way as other similar games. If you're looking for a creative outlet, though, you can probably do a little worse than this game.
