Incredibox Review – A Fascinating and Colorful Adventure into Music

Introduction

Certain games and apps are developed strictly for entertainment. Occasionally one comes along that serves a valuable learning purpose. Incredibox is such a game. It is a game and website that uses musical beats as its theme. There have been six version releases since the initial web browser release in 2009. Three men pooled their collective talents to create an interactive musical experience. Allan Durand was the programmer, Romain Delambily, the graphics expert, and Paul Malburet was the music composer. Malburet was known as Incredible Polo, at some level the inspiration for the name Incredibox.

Concept

An original version of Incredibox was released ten years ago as a web browser game. There are several differences between today’s remastered version and the flash game. In between the most recent release, there were five versions released. Little Miss, Sunrise and The Love were made available between March 2012 and November 2014. Beginning in May 2016, the subsequent three releases were exclusively for the Incredibox app. Each of the last three themes uses a unique musical genre. The Brazil release was inspired by Brazilian music with animated bonuses using Portuguese. Alive is based on Japanese music with three animated bonuses, likewise sung in Japanese. The most recent version, Jeevan, was released early last summer. It is the first version based on Indian music with each bonus theme sung in Hindi. The concept used for Incredibox is excellent. We score concept with a strong 4 out of 5 stars.

Graphics and Audio

Since the game focuses on music, the audio is excellent. Incredibox uses some seemingly generic looking figures as its main characters. The fact that there are no ladies might be something the developers change in future versions. Each character is amusing but is displayed in black and white. As the sounds are assigned to each character, they project a sense of playful silliness. The gameplay is somewhat challenging at first, but once players get the hang of the drag-and-drop strategy, it becomes easier. Incredibox has amusing, although very basic themes and characters, with excellent audio. We scored it 3 out of 5 stars for graphics and audio combined.

Gameplay

Incredibox uses a few hip dudes as each player’s own beatbox music crew. The initial screen shows one of these charming and humorous characters. Players will give this first character a musical element that keeps repeating. There are choices made as the game progresses. Players explore various musical beats by applying melodies, choruses and voices. As more characters appear, players give each a unique sound by drag and drop. There is a bar full of color and music options. Incredibox will then shift to another hip character and players assign a new sound to that person. Players continue to play the game, choosing new sounds for each character until they have masterfully composed a complete melody. There are no sound mistakes, as each one fits into the final song as players assign new sounds. The gameplay is musically engaging and educational, scoring 5 out of 5 stars.

Conclusion

Incredibox found almost instant success. After the first web browser launch, it was a feature on the Favorite Website Award FWA. The first update, Incredibox 2.0, which eventually became Little Miss, had so many single-day visits it crashed the server in April 2012. Parents and teachers rate the new mobile app version to be highly educational. It is deemed an excellent way for children to expand their creativity and explore different types of music. Incredibox is presented as a fun app, but at the same time, can teach musical concepts and composition skills. With a vast audience and valuable lesson tools, Incredibox scores a perfect 5 out of 5 stars for replay value.

TL/DR

At first glance, Incredibox is just another entertaining game, but the further investigation uncovers a fascinating and colorful adventure into an elaborate array of musical genres.
