Bookworm: A Simple Word Puzzle Classic

Introduction

Bookworm is the classic, world-famous word puzzle game featuring the adorable bookworm Lex. Create tons of words across levels for Lex to nom through. This video game is for a single player. There are letter tiles on a cascading grid, and players create words from this board. The levels get more taxing as the game progresses, but Lex is always alongside players, eagerly eating words and sharing the definitions!

Concept

In Bookworm, link together letter tiles on a grid and create words for Lex to munch. The bigger the words are, the more points get earned. Letter tiles can be linked horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The concept is simple, but PopCap Games keeps it interesting by adding unique and dangerous tiles. These randomly generated tiles can appear at any time and exist to speed up the word creating process. Juggle lots different puzzle aspects while linking letters and creating big words for Lex. Sometimes, levels will have specific win conditions. Either way, Bookworm successfully delivers an easy-to-grasp concept and earns 4/5.

Graphics & Audio

The graphics in Bookworm are incredibly basic. The video game has been around since 2003, and it likely hasn't seen a graphics update since its release. There isn't a lot of complexity that needs to be added to a game focused on tiles and letters, but Lex is pretty two-dimensional. He doesn't do much besides eat letters and spit out the definitions of words that players create. The bookshelf above Lex's head fills as players bust out new words, a cute way for marking progress. The music is upbeat but simple. The chime-filled tune makes players feel the hectic vibe of word creation on a timer. However, Bookworm suffers due to the dated aspects of both graphics and audio. Overall, these are simply average at 3/5.

Game Play

The simple concept of this video game makes picking up the gameplay a breeze. There are rows and columns of letters which cascade down the screen on a timer. Clicking letters and successfully creating a word makes the selected tiles disappear. Then more tiles fall in to fill in gaps. The levels get more difficult as players progress, however, so creating big words is important. There are no aid items, so players rely completely on skill. Different dangerous tiles will appear sometimes. Players must deal with these or lose the level. For example, a flaming tile will sear through the column it landed in until the player uses its letter. Gameplay in Bookworm is difficult but rewarding. Additionally, there is little in the way of helping items or tricks for players to get out of a tough situation. As a result, the simplicity falls flat in an era of combos and help items. Overall, Bookworm gobbles down a 3.5/5 due to this.

Conclusion

All in all, Bookworm is a classic game. It plays like a classic puzzle game and looks like one as well. While there isn't anything wrong with classic content, the graphics and audio leave something to be desired. The simplicity of gameplay is also lacklustre. Staring at a board with absolutely no idea what word to make next while a flaming "E" destroys tiles is more frustrating than fun. Bookworm earns a 3.5/5. It's slightly above average, but its dated gameplay and graphics don't translate in any memorable way.

Bookworm is a puzzle game where players link letter tiles together on a moving grid, creating all sorts of words!
