Tanuki Sunset - Longboard in Style as a Mythical Raccoon

A skateboarding game with a splash of cyberpunk aesthetic.

A Raccoon on a Longboard

At its heart, Tanuki Sunset is a skateboarding game. The cyberpunk aesthetic and synth-wave soundtrack set it apart from the typical grunge setting. It's a fresh take on the genre, giving the player control of a raccoon on a longboard.

Hangin ten toes on a Longboard

Players take control of a tanuki – a Japanese raccoon – on a longboard. The goal is the same as any skateboarding game, be as stylish as you can on your way downhill.

...car jumps to a chill electronic soundtrack.

Synthwave music and neon lights

The backdrop for the game appears to draw inspiration from chillwave released in the last few years. The neon lights of Miami and its fluorescent glow immediately spring to mind as players begin their descent.

Accompanying the visuals is a chill electronic soundtrack inspired by artists like Emil Rottmayer. The soundtrack itself is available on Bandcamp and is worth a listen if you enjoy synthwave music. Artist Nonatomusic worked closely with the developer to create the game's soundtrack.

Jump, Turn, Risks to earn points!

So a skateboarding raccoon on a longboard goes downhill, now what? Of course, you're racking up points with your skillful little Tanuki. You can perform drift combos and jump over cars on the road. Tanuki Sunset rewards players for drift time and air time.

The game rewards risky moves, garner more points for near misses on car jumps.

The longer you can stay on the longboard while facing oncoming traffic, the more points you rack up. Players can fill up a Bonus Roulette meter, which grants huge point bonuses on tricks when it is activated. Activating the bonus meter while jumping over a car is a great way to boost your score if you can pull off the jump.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple to learn, with only two controls needed to start. The drift mechanics and air time physics are delightful to master. The two-button controls are also ideal for younger players who are learning to game. There is no blood or gore if the Tanuki falls off the skateboard, either.

I haven't had this much fun with a skateboarding game since Olli.

Relaxing laid back fun

Tanuki Sunset is a relaxing skateboarding game that offers as much fun or challenge as you like. Learning how to drift and maximize air time is engaging.

The developer Squid Squad says this game is for everyone – but it's a love letter to skateboard game fans. You can check out the game now on itch.io. The developers are planning to release the game on Steam sometime this year.

Fans of laid back games or those who like challenging themselves will enjoy the gameplay. The soundtrack alone is worth experiencing as there seem to be around ten separate tracks. Each track is delightfully chill and accompanies the setting well.

TL/DR

Tanuki Sunset is a fresh take on the skateboarding game genre. A chill synthwave soundtrack accompanies the unique third-person perspective.

From the Developers

What follows is the official description of Tanuki Sunset, from the developers.

Tanuki Sunset is a third-person longboard-skating game where players play as a raccoon skating downhill on a procedurally generated synthwave-themed seaside road.

Drift your way around the narrow corners, gather Tanuki Bits to fill up your Bonus Roulette Meter and try and gather as many points as you can.

Drift often. Get some air-time and avoid cars and obstacles while pushing your luck close to the walls and edges to get near-miss moments and tight-squeezes to maximize your score.

This game supports Xbox 360 controller input and Keyboard controls.
