When id Software rebooted the DOOM franchise in 2016, no one expected it to be as good as it was. Instead of forcing a bunch of game mechanics that no one wanted, the developer kept what made the original DOOM so much fun in the first place: fast-paced, demon-slaying action.
Thankfully, the sequel, DOOM Eternal, follows much of the same formula. However, the focus is on keeping you in action and using your wide array of guns.
One of the great things about DOOM Eternal is that you can invest as much or as little into the story as you want. The game itself doesn't force the story down your throat. Instead, you can pick up and read text files along the way to fill in the pieces.
For most DOOM players, this works well because the story is nothing more than an add-on to the real draw of the game: nonstop carnage. This is fine since you won't miss out on much if you plow through the game and never read any of the text files that you find.
Despite that, the premise of DOOM Eternal picks up two years after DOOM 2016. After destroying Hell's army, which was on its way to Earth, Doomguy takes the fight to the interdimensional demons. The story that you can read will fill the gaps in between.
DOOM Eternal is a fast-paced first-person shooter that does a great job of putting you right in the middle of the action. In short, everything is more "badass," and this includes graphics and audio.
The graphics accurately show off the insane world. The demons look fantastic, and the bloodshed is on point. This is all topped with a rocking metal soundtrack that genuinely fits the tone of the game.
The gameplay is where DOOM Eternal shines. It's fast-paced from the moment that you start the game until the very end. If you enjoy this type of gameplay and first-person shooters, you'll love this title.
However, the game doesn't hold your hand. Since it's so fast-paced, you have to commit much of the gameplay to muscle memory. As such, your first few hours of the game could be slightly frustrating. As your muscle memory kicks in, though, killing hordes of demons will become second nature.
Is this game better than DOOM 2016? Most players probably won't think so. Despite that, DOOM Eternal is a standout game in the series and a great sequel in the rebooted franchise.
The graphics are fantastic, if not a little colorful when you see all of the powerups fill the screen. On top of that, the music is fitting. While the gameplay might take you a bit longer than most first-person shooters to get the hang of, it will be some of the most fun that you've had in a DOOM game once you do.
The replay value on this one is high. Once you beat the game, which takes roughly 20 hours, you'll be itching to beat down some of the demons that used to give you trouble.
DOOM Eternal offers new and creative ways to dispatch hordes of demon spawn like never before.
What follows is the official description of DOOM Eternal, from the developers.
