Unturned - A blocky zombie adventure that offers a ton of ways to play

Zombies! Big, blocky zombies!

Zombies are your main foe!

Unturned is a free-to-play Survival style game. Like many games within this genre, zombies are your main foe. Although the game comes with many different variants, all essentially twist on the idea of trying to survive for as long as possible.

Wait, there's a story?

"In a relative rarity for the free-to-play survival genre, Unturned comes with a story that gives some interesting spice to an otherwise cliched genre": You are one of the sole survivors of a zombie outbreak that occurred in the Scorpion-7 lab. Your goal is to help the coalition take back control of the various game maps.

As part of the game, you move from map to map, surviving as long as you can and completing various objectives. You also collect armor, weapons, upgrades, and more.

Showing its age

When Unturned was released in 2014, its graphics weren't great, and things have only gone downhill. Unturned mimics Roblox's blocky style, which makes sense, given that its developer was a former Roblox programmer. However, the game offers no detail, no layering, no background, and nothing to grasp your attention. It's one big, blocky, awkward pixel moving across the screen. If you like this style, this game will not present you with any problems. However, generally speaking, the game's graphics are weak at best.

Play your way - there are a lot of ways to play

in the "standard" version of Unturned, you try to survive as long as you can. You have to keep up your levels of various statistics, including food, water, and health, and must do this while keeping your radiation levels low. You take radiation damage by being hit with a zombie or walking into certain radiation zones. Take enough damage; you die.

One of the more interesting facets about Unturned is that it comes with a wide array of game modes - far more than most free-to-play games usually offer. Including numerous multiplayer fights, including role-play, survival, paintball, creative, and Battle Royale. All of these modes have their own rules, providing players with an excellent opportunity to find a version of the game that works best for them.

Like most successful games these days, Unturned comes with a map editor and the ability to mod the game. Maps can then be uploaded to Steam, giving players a wide degree of customization over their game-play experience.

Free to play

Unturned is free to play, although a gold version is available for download for $5 on Steam. You can also purchase cosmetic items, as well as keys and cases, via the Steam market. The game is available on Windows, MAC, and Linux.

The single-player mode is relatively linear. Once you beat it, it's done, and there isn't a lot extra to it...no hidden bosses, no difficult collectibles, nothing to entice you to return to the main game-play. However, context is important: This is a free-to-play game, and the emphasis is mainly on the multiplayer.

Thankfully, the multiplayer excels. Players can experience an array of different experiences via the game's various modes, and you will be likely to find something that best suits your needs.

TL/DR

This free-to-play effort offers a wide variety of options and a surprisingly fun single-player game, offering players a chance to enjoy numerous versions of this action-oriented survival game.
