Spintires: MudRunner

Introduction

Some players crave frustration. It's not just that they don't want things handed to them; they want to succeed by actively fighting in a game. If you want to combine a love for driving big rigs with a hatred of easy games, Spintires: Mudrunner might be for you.

Concept - 3

Do you like the idea of racing a car offroad? If so, this game wants to punish you. Instead of creating a fun rally down a muddy slop or even letting you take a big truck mudding, this is a game about the plodding realism of trying to navigate a huge machine off-road. The fun that's here isn't in speed or maneuverability, but rather in your ability to plan and get yourself out of trouble. It's certainly a unique take on the driving genre, albeit one that's a little too niche for many gamers.

Graphics and Audio - 4

There is absolutely no reason that a game that's this ugly should look so pretty. The sheer amount of loving detail that has gone into rendering mud in this game borders on the unreal, and there's never a moment that this game lets players down from a visual standpoint. As long as things are all running correctly, you're going to get a visual feast - one made mostly of browns and greys, but a feast nonetheless. The audio is likewise pretty good. It's not quite as good as the visuals, but it does still work. The vehicles sound appropriately burly, every bump and scrape sounds like it would in real life, and even the landscape has the kind of audio design that goes a long way towards establishing a living, breathing world. The only downside here is that from time to time, the graphics don't work right. There's screen tearing, there are camera problems, and there are a host of glitches that can and will take you out of the game. It's a shame, though, because the game looks beautiful when it works.

Gameplay - 3

The gameplay in Spintires: Mudrunner is be best described as punishing. This is a design choice rather than a flaw, though - the game isn't meant to be a breezy, fun playthrough. It is about as brutal as the landscapes through which you drive, and even the smallest mistake can turn what would have been an otherwise successful run into a disaster. The game demands a lot out of the people who play it, but it's almost entirely upfront about that fact. While all of the systems generally work reasonably well, there's still a sense of drudgery in this game that is kind of unparalleled. Again, this is probably the point of the game - driving Eastern European trucks through the mud isn't all that much fun in real life. In that way, at least, the game does manage to nail a consistent tone and manages to translate the experience into something that works surprisingly well for a video game.

Conclusion - Replayability - 3

One of the hardest things about Spintires: Mudrunner is figuring out whether or not it's worth a player's time. In some ways, this game is aggressively unfun. In other ways, though, it's precisely the kind of challenge that some gamers want. If your goal in gaming is to prove that you can beat anything that a developer throws at you regardless of whether you like the challenge or not, you'll love the game. If you're here for driving, racing, or even just an experience that won't frustrate you, though, you might want to look elsewhere.

Spintires: MudRunner is a frustratingly well-designed driving game that pits your driving skills against nature in contests that most players will inevitably lose.
