TerraTech Review: A Mech-style Sandbox for Creative Minds

Introduction

Survival games are a genre that saw an explosion in popularity over the last several years. There are countless options, but none quite like the latest title from the team over at Payload Studios, Terra Tech combines building with battling in its unique world. Start with a simple machine, and through exploration, gathering, and fighting, build a gadget worthy of taking on even the toughest bad guys. Let's check out the basics of this indie title!

Concept

Terra Tech combines RPG aspects with adventure survival games. It's all about gathering materials and making or upgrading machines. Additionally, there is an alien plant ready for exploring! The ability to play and build in several different ways makes Terra Tech a great game for anyone who enjoys different genres. The blend of gathering, fighting, and exploring all while looking for materials keep this concept fresh. Leveling up unlocks new crafting recipes and machine builds. Combining these concepts for an experience that plays quite like nothing else available earns a 5/5 for its thoughtfulness.

Graphics and Audio

The environment of Terratech is simple yet wholly interactive and destructive. Knock trees down, destroy boulders, and collect the materials on the back of your vehicle. All of these events happen pretty seamlessly. The lack of detail in the backgrounds, however, is made up for in machine graphics. Intricate pieces show every connection angle, and it's easy to see the way things fit together. Map markers are clearly displayed, and the minimap is simple for navigating through the world. Everything graphics-wise balances out in the end, winding up with a 4/5. The audio is average for an open-world, adventure game. The mellow sounds in the background are often drowned out when you charge into battle, replaced by machine explosions and gunfire. This attention to various changes in gameplay during a single session makes the audio a noteworthy aspect of Terra Tech.

Gameplay

Terra Tech has so many things to do! Start as a tiny machine exploring an alien planet. Gathering pieces and resources is probably the most crucial aspect. These are how you'll grow your machine, either by selling resources for bucks or by creating machine parts yourself. The adventure mode helps you gather basic pieces, such as the radar for your build or various weapons parts. When exploring, expect to encounter enemies! These battles are well worth your while, though. Destroying enemies will give you plenty of blocks to add to your build, or stash for later. Terra Tech is, at its core, an open-world sandbox. All of these things can be done simultaneously, or you can choose one or several ways of play. Sick of gathering? Test out your latest creation on some randomly spawning evil machines. Furthermore, team up with friends in the co-op and explore the planet together! Build great things in the smooth, 5/5 gameplay friendly for veteran gamers and newcomers alike.

Conclusion

Terratech takes the concept of open-world adventure games and adds in machines. Undertake the never-ending upgrade process, scouring the world for resources and parts. The fascinating alien world and intricate creations are only the beginning. Explore, fight, and build alone or with friends. Level up and unlock new options. This indie title from Payload Studios takes snap building to the next level, with countless possible ways to build your machine! Check out what amazing things your imagination is capable of with this sweet sandbox game.

TL/DR

TerraTech is a sandbox survival game enjoyed solo or with friends in co-op adventure and creative modes.

From the Developers

What follows is the official description of TerraTech, from the developers.

TerraTech is an open-world, sandbox adventure game, where you design and build your own creations through a mix of crafting, combat and discovery. Explore a hostile alien landscape, or design with creative freedom. The choice is yours.

Start your career as an Intergalactic miner on a randomly generated infinite world in search of profit and glory in Campaign, sit back and build to your hearts content in Creative mode or pit your Techs against the clock and dare to run the Gauntlet Challenge. There are many game modes available in TerraTech to stretch your Tech building imagination to the limits!

Story

In the distant future, Earth's natural resources have been depleted, and as a resource-gathering prospector it's your job to travel to alien planets and scour them for valuable materials. But you are not alone! Rival prospectors litter the landscapes of these new worlds, and will fight to protect whats theirs, and invade to take whats yours. To make your mark, you will need to be cunning and creative.

Using the building blocks, guns, wheels, and wings from several Mining Corporations, you can build varied Techs to suit every purpose. Be it powerful armoured combat vehicles, unstoppable resource gathering machines, sprawling resource processing bases or a hybrid of all three - creativity is your key to exo-planetary success.

The worlds in TerraTech are procedurally generated and infinite, so there are always new lands to discover and more resources to find. Treacherous mountain ranges, luscious grasslands and huge deserts are among the biomes you will encounter. More will be added as development progresses.

The intergalactic mining industry is a profitable one, but you are not the only miner in search for new worlds to exploit. Defending yourself from rival miners will take time, resources and skill, with success leading to new territory and new lands. All equipable blocks and items can be damaged or destroyed, so ensuring you are sufficiently armed and ready for battle is a key element of both survival and prosperity in TerraTech. Get out there and show them whos boss!

By gathering and processing natural resources, players are able to construct storage, refining and construction bases in order to craft new blocks in the game. Like the look of that Venture Hail Fire Rifle that just tore your vehicle apart? Go prospecting for the needed resources, and craft a couple for yourself in the shiny new Venture fabricator which you just aquired, by beating their time trial challenge in the nearby mountains.

All exo-planetary miners buy parts from the established Mining Corporations, which each have their own specific brand of mining technology. Get the job done with GSO, zoom around with high-performance recon specialists Venture, strip-mine to the max with the heavy-duty GeoCorp or act with miltary efficiency utilizing the stealth focussed Hawkeye. New Corporations were aiming to add to the game include deranged experimental scientists Reticule Research, technological superiority giants Better Future and the hive-mind AI swarms of LEGION. Completing missions and discovering blocks for each Corp will improve your standing with them, and gain access to the more sought-after components in their arsenal.

This is an Early Access game, with everything that implies. Please check the System Requirements to ensure your PC is compatible.
