Granny Chapter 2 - Granny, Grandpa, hand grenades and a big ole escape room

Escape the house of your sadistic and evil grandparents

Escape Granny's house

This is the sequel to Granny, which came out in 2018. In that game, your goal is to escape Granny's house in under five days. Your job is to search the house, find the items to unlock the door but be VERY quiet in doing so: If Granny captures you, the game is over.

The sequel presents much of the same content, but with some noticeable improvements in the game-play.

Granny AND Grandpa?

Much of the plot in this version is the same. You wake up in a disgusting, gross bedroom, and have to escape. To do so, you find clues, locate objects, and solve puzzles while trying to avoid both Granny and Grandpa.

However, there are some major improvements over the last game. The puzzles are more advanced, and there are more places to hide, a variety of ways to escape the house, and an awful lot of weapons. Yes, weapons. Look out, Granny!

The concept is a tried-and-true one, but it's solid. It doesn't need a backstory or mass of plot exposition, because the story is well-integrated into the game-play. Granny and Grandpa are evil. Escape, however, you can.

Lazy pictures, frightening sounds

Unfortunately, there's nothing too fantastic about the graphics. Yes, they are gritty and contribute to a general sensation of grossness, but there is such a lack of variety that it often comes off as lazy, copy, and paste work. Maybe that's what the developers were going for here, but compared to other games that are on the market, the graphics lack a particular punch. This is bad enough on a mobile device, but on a computer, the game's flaws are truly evident.

The graphics are even more disappointing when viewed in the context of the original: They are virtually identical. In that regard, the sequel fails to offer up any meaningful improvement.

Audio is critically essential for many of these horror games, and thankfully, the audio succeeds here and adding nice, atmospheric touches. It is dank, dark, and frightening. The sound effects echo, and this does an amazing job of exacerbating, creating some chilling fears.

Choose Your Own Terror

Reviewers noted that some of the game-play features designed to "help" you stay quiet don't do a lot. Yes, you can crouch, but you still make noise, and all you do is walk slower. "Indeed, both characters are omnipresent, and its sort of hard to hide from two villains if they are always there."

On that note: This game is TOUGH. Granny and Grandpa are everywhere, making escaping a massive challenge. To their credit, the game developers seemed to recognize just how hard this game is and allowed for a series of modifiers that can make it easier or harder, allowing for a more customized, enjoyable experience.

Impressive that a free play game has many options

The game is available for download, for free, on mobile platforms. You can also download a computer edition off of Steam for $4.99.

The game is not one that you can replay forever, but there are plenty of ways to play it over again. You can find new spots to hide, new ways to avoid Granny & Grandpa, and try to identify all ways of escaping the house. It's honestly impressive that a free-to-play game has this many options.

TL/DR

Granny Chapter 2 is a difficult challenge that is more than worth playing - particularly when you consider the price.
