Explore the Inner Workings of Ant Colonies
Bugs are a constant presence in our lives, yet it's not often that we think about them. Empires of the Undergrowth, the latest simulator from Slug Disco Studios, takes on these creatures in a way like never before. Manage a colony of ants from beginning to completion, maintain the territory, protect it from competing colonies and predators, and discover the delicate balance of this itty bitty ecosystem.
This exciting game started nearly four years ago on the popular crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Since then, it's gone through changes and evolution as well as moved onto early access availability on Steam.
At its core, however, Empires of the Undergrowth has always been a simulation and strategy game. Control a living hive, and complete levels or challenges to earn upgrades for it. The developers are evolving exactly how you complete various actions, but their concept remains rock-solid and receives a 5/5 for pure originality and cleverness.
simulator fans will be immediately intrigued!
It's obvious, even in early access, that Empires of the Undergrowth is beautiful. The lush environments feature vibrant colors and minute details. The camera zooms in through towering plants and allows you to discover secrets galore. Use scout ants and explore the ground floor like never before in a simulator.
Additionally, expect the sounds of the insect world. Building and demolishing parts of your colony have a satisfying cascade sound.
The ambient world outside of your base has plenty of variety as well.
There are plenty of bugs to work on. Empires of the Undergrowth is under active development, and it's easy to report these to the developers. The execution of graphics and audio is already a good chunk of the way there, with a 4/5.
As previously mentioned, the game currently features a sort of home base, called a formicarium; you might recognize it like an ant farm). You can breed different types of ants here, as well as maintain your resources supply. Maybe most important is that it's where you access challenges.
Completing these challenges unlocks new areas and upgrades for your formicarium, including an expanded breeding area, bigger feed stores, new open breeds, and more open different types of ants. Some challenges focus on the health inside your hive, as well as plenty where you must venture outside!
Be careful, though, because the outside world is a hostile place. Enemy colonies, as well as other predators like spiders and mice, are lurking.
Check out this expansive, game-play and explore what else awaits for yourself.
As Empires of the Undergrowth continues to put on the finishing touches, we already see a solid game emerging. There's a decent amount of content with plenty more being created and released steadily from the developers. Early access games are always a fun way to get in on the ground level of an emerging community and get hands-on experience with game creation!
Empires of the Undergrowth is an early access simulator where you take control of an ant colony down to the most minute details.
What follows is the official description of Empires of the Undergrowth, from the developers.
"Your queen has set up home beneath a rotting log. She is fat, and vulnerable. Her first brood will need to move quickly if the colony is to survive. Their priority now is to find food, and there is plenty around; but there are other hungry creatures in the undergrowth. The workers will need to be vigilant."
Empires of the Undergrowth is an ant colony management game, in a fast-paced real-time strategy style. The player excavates their nest underground, constructing tunnels and chambers to store food and raise brood. On the surface, the ants claim territory, gather resources, overwhelm fearsome arachnids and clash with other colonies. Nest design, army size, composition and attack timing are key to securing victory.
Missions are narrated from the perspective of a documentary film maker studying the ants, who offers intelligent insight into the goings-on of the colony and the undergrowth beyond. The primary game mode in early access is Formicarium, where you take ownership of a home colony of unique DNA-harvesting ants as they work to assimilate the desirable traits of their foes. You can upgrade them by playing one-off missions, sometimes with your home colony and sometimes with other ant species.
